Summary
- Xbox owners can now convert physical discs to digital.
- A digital entitlement is granted by inserting the disc.
- This program supports most Xbox One and Series X games.

Xbox owners are set to gain the ability to convert their physical game discs into digital entitlements. This new program, which began testing with Xbox Insiders on August 31, allows players to claim a digital version of most Xbox One and Series X disc-based games. The process involves inserting the disc and launching the game, after which it can be played digitally without the need for the physical disc, provided the account is logged in.
This digital entitlement also extends benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming for compatible titles. While the physical disc will continue to function, each disc grants only one revokable license, meaning the digital entitlement can be transferred if the disc is resold or loaned. Publishers must opt-in for their games to be supported, and some older discs may be incompatible. Xbox Vice President Jason Ronald stated this is a step towards ensuring players can keep their games for years to come, especially relevant as future Xbox consoles may omit disc drives. This initiative echoes an earlier, reversed plan from 2013 that faced fan backlash over licensing restrictions.
