xAI Rebuilds: Only 2 of 11 Founders Remain
14 Mar
Summary
- Only two original co-founders remain at Elon Musk's xAI.
- xAI is undergoing significant personnel changes to compete better.
- The company lags in AI coding tools, a key revenue area.

Elon Musk's AI venture, xAI, is undergoing a significant restructuring, leaving only two of its initial eleven co-founders. Musk stated on his platform, X, that the company was "not built right first time around, so is being rebuilt from the foundations up." This personnel overhaul is a direct response to competitive pressures, particularly a perceived lag in AI coding tools compared to offerings from Anthropic and OpenAI.
The company is facing challenges beyond its coding capabilities. A month prior, eleven senior engineers, including two co-founders, departed following a reorganization. Executives from SpaceX and Tesla have reportedly been brought in to evaluate staff. This week, co-founders Zihang Dai and Guodong Zhang left the outfit.
Despite these departures, xAI has secured new talent, with Andrew Milich and Jason Ginsberg joining from Cursor. Their move may indicate the value placed on xAI's direct access to large language models and computing resources. Meanwhile, Musk is personally reviewing rejected job applications to identify promising candidates.
Longer term, xAI's Macrohard project, aimed at creating an AI agent for white-collar tasks, has faced setbacks, including project leadership changes and a reported pause. This ambitious initiative is now a joint effort with Tesla, integrating with its 'Digital Optimus' agent, envisioning the xAI model directing Tesla's robotic agent.
