Residents Fight Elon Musk's xAI Over Constant Plant Noise
16 Jul
Summary
- Southaven residents allege xAI data center noise causes health issues.
- Noise complaints cite sleepless nights, headaches, and anxiety.
- Lawsuits filed against xAI highlight growing data center resistance.

In Southaven, Mississippi, residents like Jason Haley are experiencing severe sleep disturbances and health issues attributed to noise from a plant powering Elon Musk's xAI data centers. Haley, who has lived in Southaven for two decades, began hearing a constant whirring noise around August 2025, which he says disrupts sleep and causes ear ringing. He is one of three residents who filed a lawsuit in June 2026 against xAI and its subsidiary MZX Tech, alleging detrimental physical and psychological health impacts.
This situation mirrors similar disputes in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, and Lowell, Massachusetts, where data centers have also faced noise complaints from residents. With over 4,000 data centers in the U.S., developers are increasingly building their own power plants, sometimes with minimal notice. Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite acknowledged the noise problem to Haley in emails dating back to November 2025, but residents feel their concerns are not being adequately addressed.
Taylor Logsdon, another Southaven resident and plaintiff, reports migraines, anxiety, and sleep deprivation for her family, including her young children, due to the noise that sometimes shakes her home. While xAI reportedly spent millions on sound mitigation efforts like sound walls and berms, these have proven ineffective. The NAACP also filed a lawsuit in April 2026, alleging the Southaven plant emits harmful pollutants from its gas turbines, raising environmental and health concerns in an area already experiencing high asthma rates.
Musk's investment in the Southaven area has reached $20 billion, hailed as Mississippi's largest economic development project. However, residents like Logsdon question the cost to their health and quality of life, especially as Southaven's median household income is already above the state average. The ongoing legal battles and community activism underscore a broader societal tension between technological development and the well-being of local populations.
