X has now fully rolled out its Handle Marketplace, enabling users to buy or claim coveted usernames from old, inactive accounts. This feature, announced earlier this year, allows individuals and businesses to secure desirable handles that were previously unavailable. Access to this marketplace, however, is exclusively for subscribers of Premium+ or Premium Business tiers.

The marketplace distinguishes between Priority and Rare handles. Priority handles are generally accessible with approval from X's team, often comprising full names or common phrases. Rare handles, including short, generic, or culturally significant names, are available via invite or limited public drops. These sought-after Rare handles can command prices ranging from $2,500 to over seven figures.

X's monetization efforts for user identity, including changes to verification systems since Elon Musk's takeover, have faced scrutiny. Previous initiatives like the paid Blue checkmark system in 2023 led to misinformation incidents.
