X Engagement Plummets: Publishers Fleeing
10 Apr
Summary
- EFF saw 97% fewer impressions on X posts compared to 2018.
- NiemanLab report suggests links on X posts reduce engagement.
- Traffic from X to publishers has significantly declined since 2018.

Engagement on X has seen a considerable decline, leading several publishers to reconsider their presence on the platform. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) recently announced its departure after nearly two decades, citing a dramatic decrease in post impressions. EFF reported that its posts now receive less than 3% of the views they did seven years ago.
This exodus follows a trend of news organizations and academics leaving X. Previously, outlets like NPR and PBS departed due to being mislabeled as "state-affiliated media." Other organizations cited Elon Musk's controversial associations as a reason for leaving.
Recent analyses, including a report from NiemanLab, suggest that posts on X containing links may negatively impact engagement. Data analyst Nate Silver also noted a significant drop in traffic referrals from X compared to previous years, a sentiment echoed by other publishers dealing with shifting online consumer behaviors and rising AI usage.
While some argue that news outlets use X incorrectly by merely posting headlines and links, others, like Silver, found that even efforts to foster on-platform discussion yielded minimal increases in off-site traffic. X's current landscape is reportedly dominated by low-quality, high-engagement conservative influencers, further alienating traditional news sources.
