X is rolling out a new feature that offers users insights into how the platform's algorithm impacts their post visibility, a move aimed at addressing concerns about "shadowbans." This tool, currently in a limited testing phase, allows users to download account data.

The downloaded information can reveal "visibility-limiting labels" applied to posts, such as NSFW, spam, or civic integrity flags. This feature is being released alongside X's decision to open-source additional aspects of its ranking algorithm.

While X describes these changes as providing unprecedented transparency, the data may be complex to interpret. The "under the hood" tool provides aggregate statistics rather than per-post details. Specific labels, like those for NSFW content, can hide posts from non-followers and underage users.

Furthermore, X plans to invite third-party experts to review the open-sourced code. Elon Musk has stated that all code touching the X system will eventually be open-sourced and audited. However, the company is withholding information that could be exploited to manipulate the algorithm.
