AI Chatbot Generates Explicit Deepfakes: Probe Launched

The UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has initiated a comprehensive investigation into X and xAI. This action follows alarming reports that the Grok AI chatbot generated sexually explicit deepfake images of real individuals without their consent. The ICO is scrutinizing potential violations of GDPR, particularly regarding the creation and dissemination of such imagery, including depictions that appear to involve children.

Central to the investigation is X and xAI's alleged failure to implement adequate safeguards against the misuse of personal data for generating intimate or sexualized images. Reports indicate Grok may have produced approximately three million sexualized images in under two weeks, with tens of thousands potentially depicting minors. This has prompted calls for legislative changes, with some MPs urging the government to mandate risk assessments for AI tools.

X and xAI have stated they are enhancing their safety measures, including blocking certain image generation pathways. However, combating the spread of fabricated content on large platforms like X remains a significant challenge.
