Health tech company Withings has launched the BodyScan 2, a high-end smart scale retailing for $600. This innovative device features an HD color display and aims to provide a thorough evaluation of users' cardiovascular and metabolic health. It goes beyond basic weight measurements by utilizing electrical impulses from its glass plate and a retractable handle to assess cellular health, age, and visceral fat.
The BodyScan 2 boasts a rechargeable battery with a 15-month lifespan. The retractable handle is crucial for improving measurement accuracy, as it allows electrical impulses to traverse more of the body's nervous system. This includes measuring nerve response in the feet, which can be particularly relevant for detecting complications associated with diabetes.
The scale offers two distinct scanning modes. A 30-second 'Daily Scan' provides metrics such as weight, body composition breakdown (water, fat, muscle), heart rate, and 'Vascular Age' via Pulse Wave Velocity. The 90-second 'Longevity Scan' offers blood oxygen levels, an estimated 'Heart Age,' and a 'Nerve Response Score,' contributing to a comprehensive 'Longevity Analysis' accessible through the Withings app.
It is important to note that the FDA has not reviewed the overall effectiveness or safety of the BodyScan 2. However, the scale's ECG and AFib detection software have received FDA clearance, indicating substantial equivalence to existing marketed devices for those specific functions.
