Linux Gaming Soars: NTSYNC Delivers 678% Performance Boost!
25 Mar
Summary
- NTSYNC support in Wine offers performance gains up to 678% for games.
- New /dev/ntsync device handles thread synchronization natively in Linux kernel.
- Wine 11 also completes WoW64 implementation for 32-bit game compatibility.

Performance bottlenecks for Windows games on Linux are now a thing of the past, thanks to the introduction of NTSYNC support in Wine 11. This significant update, rolled out in January 2026, dramatically enhances game performance by improving thread synchronization.
The new /dev/ntsync device allows the Linux kernel to handle synchronization natively, bypassing the previous inefficient Remote Procedure Call method via wineserver. Documentation indicates potential performance gains ranging from 50-100% for many games, with some benchmarks showing increases as high as 678%.
To leverage these improvements, users require Linux kernel version 6.14 or newer and the ntsync module loaded. Wine 11 also features a complete WoW64 implementation, crucial for running 32-bit games on systems that are phasing out 32-bit support. This release marks a major leap forward for Linux gaming.
