Windows Update Silences USB Audio Devices
14 Sep
Summary
- Windows update causes sound issues on older USB audio devices.
- The problem impacts devices using the legacy USB Audio Class 1.0 driver.
- Switching audio output to stereo mode offers a temporary fix.

A Windows security update rolled out on September 8, 2026, has created an audio problem for users with older USB devices. The update, KB5124008, may cause sound to fail on devices relying on the USB Audio Class 1.0 driver, a legacy technology from Windows 98. This can result in no audio, unresponsive sound settings, or error messages in Device Manager.
Modern audio devices typically use the more advanced USB Audio Class 2.0 or connect via audio jacks or Bluetooth. However, the continued use of older hardware means this glitch affects a segment of Windows users. Microsoft has acknowledged the issue and is actively developing a permanent fix.
In the interim, a workaround exists for affected users. The problem appears linked to multichannel audio modes. By changing the audio output setting from multichannel configurations (like 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound) back to standard stereo mode within the Sound applet in Control Panel, audio can often be restored. Users are advised to select 'stereo' under Audio channels for the affected USB device.
