Windows Malware Surge: Are Macs Safer?
26 Aug
Summary
- Windows PCs are a larger target for malware due to market share.
- Mac users are increasingly vulnerable to phishing attacks.
- Malware targeting Windows users was seven times higher in 2025.

Windows PCs continue to be the primary target for malware, largely due to their dominant 71 percent market share. Microsoft’s CEO reported over 1.6 billion active Windows devices as of early 2026. This vast user base makes Windows a more lucrative target for cybercriminals developing malicious software.
Conversely, Apple’s macOS holds a smaller desktop market share, around seven percent according to recent estimates. While Windows users experienced seven times more malware in 2025 compared to macOS users, this does not mean Macs are entirely safe.
Recent trends suggest an increase in threats targeting macOS users. A ClickFix attack, for instance, was recently observed on macOS, leading to infostealer malware installation. Furthermore, phishing attacks, which are easier to execute than developing platform-specific malware, are disproportionately affecting macOS users.
As macOS gains market share, the variety and volume of threats are expected to rise. This shift indicates that while Windows remains the larger target, users of all operating systems must remain vigilant against evolving cyber threats.
