Windows File History Bug: September Update Breaks Backups
23 Sep
Summary
- September security update reportedly breaks Windows File History backups.
- A new optional update fixes the File History bug for most users.
- Windows 11 23H2 and Windows 10 users still await a fix for the bug.

A critical bug introduced by the September 8 Patch Tuesday update has disrupted the File History backup feature for numerous Windows users. Those affected reported an inability to create or run backups, often receiving prompts to reconnect their drives despite proper connection. Additionally, backup timestamps may fail to update, and previously backed-up files could report as unavailable.
This issue impacts all current Windows 11 versions, including 26H1, 25H2, 24H2, and 23H2, as well as Windows 10 users receiving Extended Security Updates. Microsoft has released an optional preview update, bearing KB numbers that vary by Windows 11 edition (e.g., KB5124006 for 26H1, KB5124010 for 25H2/25H2), which resolves the File History problem for these versions.
However, users of Windows 11 version 23H2 and Windows 10 are still waiting for a fix. Microsoft states it is actively working on a solution for these specific versions, which will be rolled out in a future Windows update. Until then, users of these older systems needing File History functionality are advised to install the optional preview update if available or await the October Patch Tuesday release.
