Summary
- Microsoft's Auto SR tool enhances game performance on low-power PCs.
- It aims to compete with Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR technologies.
- Currently supports 11 games, offering significant framerate boosts.

Microsoft has developed Auto Super Resolution (Auto SR), an operating system-level tool intended to enhance gaming performance on low-power Windows PCs. This feature is designed to compete with established technologies like Nvidia's DLSS and AMD's FSR, offering an alternative for users seeking better framerates and visuals.
Auto SR functions as a resolution upscaling technology, reportedly enhanced with AI. Microsoft claims it can automatically improve game performance by utilizing larger models and the NPU (Neural Processing Unit) found in some newer processors. This is particularly beneficial for handheld gaming devices that rely on integrated graphics.
The feature is currently accessible through Windows Insider builds and officially supports 11 games. Initial testing in titles like Borderlands 3 and Control has demonstrated substantial framerate increases, with reports of up to a 50 percent boost when upscaling from 720p.
Users can manually attempt to enable Auto SR in other games, provided they use DirectX 10 or later. Microsoft recommends a 720p resolution for optimal results, with a 900p maximum. While the current implementation has limitations, such as restricted game compatibility, it presents a valuable option for boosting performance on devices like the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X.
