Windows 11 Update Chaos Ends: One Restart!
2 Sep
Summary
- Windows 11 updates now bundle into a single monthly restart.
- Driver, firmware, and .NET updates will wait for Patch Tuesday.
- Critical security updates bypass the new single-restart policy.

Microsoft is implementing a significant change to Windows 11 update management, aiming to reduce user interruptions. Previously, separate updates for drivers, firmware, and .NET required multiple restarts throughout the month. Starting with updates released on and after July 28, 2026, these will be consolidated.
All updates that necessitate a system restart will now be held until the monthly Patch Tuesday security update. Windows 11 will then install these bundled updates during a single, predictable monthly restart. This change is being rolled out gradually to compatible Windows 11 PCs.
There are exceptions to this new policy. Urgent security-related updates, such as those for Microsoft Defender and critical bug fixes, will continue to be deployed immediately outside the regular monthly schedule to ensure device security and stability.
