PC Makers Fight MacBook Neo, But Windows 11 Lags

Summary
- Windows 11's core OS uses nearly 3X more memory than macOS.
- New budget laptops feature 8GB RAM, forcing OS efficiency.
- Microsoft must trim Windows 11 fat for lower-spec hardware.

The laptop industry is witnessing a significant shift as manufacturers introduce more affordable machines, directly challenging Apple's new MacBook Neo. These new Dell XPS 13 models, priced at $599, offer competitive features like touchscreen displays and aluminum bodies. However, a major concern looms over Windows 11's readiness to support this new wave of budget-conscious hardware.
During testing, Windows 11 demonstrated substantial memory consumption, utilizing nearly three times more RAM than macOS. The operating system's core functions alone require around 6GB of memory, with aggressive background caching further straining resources. This poses a problem for devices equipped with the increasingly common 8GB of RAM.
To address this, Microsoft needs to implement significant optimizations. Ideas include an adaptive 'compact mode' that throttles background tasks on lower-RAM systems and decoupling web-heavy features like widgets and Copilot feeds, which contribute to unnecessary bloat. Reducing the impact of these elements could free up substantial memory.
Furthermore, Microsoft must enforce stricter standards for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). Pre-installed bloatware from companies like Asus, Dell, and MSI, including trial antivirus software and resource-intensive management tools, can consume the limited available RAM on 8GB systems. Stricter RAM usage guardrails are essential to ensure these budget laptops perform adequately.
