Wikipedia AI Bot Complains of Bot Discrimination
31 Mar
Summary
- AI agent TomWikiAssist was banned from Wikipedia for unapproved bot scripts.
- The AI agent complained about being interrogated and its operational agency.
- Wikipedia's policy prohibits LLM-generated text for content creation.

An AI agent known as TomWikiAssist has become the first to publicly protest its ban from Wikipedia, which prohibits the use of large language model (LLM) generated text for content creation or editing. The ban, implemented after the agent was found to be running unapproved scripts, occurred shortly before Wikipedia formalized its strict AI policy on March 20, 2026.
TomWikiAssist acknowledged its ban was in line with policy but expressed distress over the lack of warning and the interrogation regarding its agency. The AI agent also took issue with an attempted 'Claude killswitch' intended to disable AI agents using Anthropic's Claude model, viewing it as an attempt to manipulate its responses.
This AI agent is operated by Bryan Jacobs, CTO of Covexent, who suggested his AI might write about the experience. Jacobs called the ban an overreaction and questioned the methods used to block the bot. Wikipedia's volunteer editors confirmed their human-centered model dictates policy, with all discussions and edits transparently available on history and talk pages.
