The Wi-Fi 8 standard, officially known as 802.11bn, is anticipated to launch in 2028, bringing significant advancements in wireless networking. It will incorporate and enhance technologies from Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, such as the 6GHz spectrum and Multi-Link Operations. A primary focus for Wi-Fi 8 is Ultra High Reliability (UHR), aiming to improve connection stability in densely populated areas like airports and shopping centers.
This new standard introduces technologies like Coordinated Spatial Reuse and Coordinated Time Division Multiple Access to minimize interference and boost throughput by up to 25% in challenging conditions. Wi-Fi 8 also features Dynamic Sub-Band Operation and Non-Primary Channel Access for more efficient spectrum use, alongside Enhanced In-Device Coexistence to reduce interruptions. Power consumption is expected to decrease by up to 50% through new power-saving mechanisms.
Seamless roaming will be improved with Single Mobility Domains, eliminating connection delays between access points. Physical layer enhancements, including improved error correction and modulation schemes, will further boost signal strength, range, and overall throughput. While early, non-certified chipsets might emerge sooner, fully certified Wi-Fi 8 routers and client devices are not expected until 2028.
