WhatsApp Usernames: Privacy Boost or Scam Bait?

WhatsApp is set to introduce usernames, a significant privacy update enabling users to connect without revealing phone numbers. This feature aims to protect user privacy, especially when communicating with unknown contacts. Every username will be unique and must adhere to platform naming rules.

However, the new feature has triggered significant concerns regarding potential impersonation scams. Ankur Warikoo, an entrepreneur, highlighted how scammers might exploit similar-sounding usernames to trick users into sending money or joining fraudulent groups, citing his own past legal battles with Meta over AI-generated scam advertisements. He emphasized the need for strong anti-abuse systems, particularly in regions like India.

Other notable figures, such as Dhruv Rathee and Vijay Shekhar Sharma, have also expressed skepticism about Meta's commitment to combating fraud across its platforms. Critics argue that while the username feature offers a privacy win, it must be accompanied by robust verification, reporting, and anti-abuse mechanisms to prevent misuse and ensure user safety.
