Meta Platforms has introduced an "Incognito Chat" feature for its AI assistant on WhatsApp, designed to address growing user concerns about data privacy. This new functionality ensures that conversations within the AI assistant are not saved and that messages disappear by default, offering a secure environment for users to explore ideas without their interactions being monitored by the company.
Will Cathcart, Head of WhatsApp, emphasized that users share significant personal and sensitive information with AI systems and should not always have to share the underlying data with the companies running these systems. While general messages shared with Meta AI may be used to improve AI models, personal chats on WhatsApp remain protected by end-to-end encryption and are not accessible for model improvement. The incognito chat is currently limited to text interactions, with no image upload capabilities.
Furthermore, the AI assistant will incorporate built-in safety guardrails to refuse inappropriate questions or redirect conversations appropriately. Meta also plans to launch "Side Chat" in the coming months, enabling users to access private AI assistance within any WhatsApp chat. These developments signal Meta's commitment to balancing AI innovation with robust user privacy protections.
