WhatsApp Ends Support for Millions of Older Phones

As of September 8, 2026, WhatsApp has ceased support for devices operating on Android 5.0 Lollipop and Android 5.1 Lollipop. This change mandates that users must upgrade to Android 6.0 Marshmallow or a more recent version to continue accessing WhatsApp Messenger and WhatsApp Business.

The messaging platform had announced this upcoming alteration back in April, providing several months for users to prepare for the transition. Those with devices incapable of updating beyond Android 5.x will find WhatsApp non-functional.

This update primarily impacts older smartphones that have not received official software updates beyond Android 5. These devices are still in use in various regions, including India, Brazil, Pakistan, Southeast Asia, and parts of Africa.

Users are encouraged to check their device's Android version via Settings > About phone. If an update to Android 6.0 or later is available, it should be installed. If the phone has reached its end of software support, a newer device will be necessary to use WhatsApp.

WhatsApp cites the need to develop new features and security improvements as the reason for ending support for older versions. This move allows the company to focus on newer capabilities and enhance overall performance and protection for the majority of users.
