WhatsApp Agrees to CCI Data Sharing Rules by March 16
23 Feb
Summary
- WhatsApp will comply with CCI data sharing directions by March 16.
- NCLAT modified directions prohibit mandatory data sharing for non-core services.
- Users will have a transparent opt-out option for consent withdrawal.

WhatsApp informed the Supreme Court on Monday that it will fully adhere to the Competition Commission of India's (CCI) directions concerning user consent for data sharing with its parent company, Meta. This commitment is set for March 16.
The company's submission was made to a bench of the Supreme Court. WhatsApp's senior counsel stated that the company would follow the directions as amended by the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) in December 2025.
The NCLAT ruling mandated that Meta implement the regulator's safeguards within three months. These safeguards explicitly forbid the mandatory sharing of WhatsApp user data for non-core services. Additionally, WhatsApp must provide users with a clear and accessible opt-out mechanism, allowing them to revoke their consent at any point.
