Bengal Leads India in Census Self-Enumeration Drive

West Bengal has emerged as the leading state in India for household participation in the Census 2027 self-enumeration initiative. By August 15, more than 5.31 million households in the state had begun the self-enumeration process, with a remarkable 93.84% completion rate. This significant achievement was supported by widespread publicity efforts across all 23 districts.

The district of Malda particularly distinguished itself through an innovative grassroots program called 'Census Connect.' This initiative integrated the digital self-enumeration platform with essential face-to-face assistance, utilizing schools, panchayats, and community organizations.

Malda's success stemmed from comprehensive community engagement, including mega parent-teacher meetings where educators guided families through the online process. Local markets and administrative meetings were also leveraged to ensure accessibility for all residents, demonstrating a strong 'Digital Platform, Human Support, Every Household Connected' approach.

This unique strategy effectively addressed the challenges of digital literacy, ensuring broad participation beyond technological familiarity. The state government lauded the Directorate of Census Operations for facilitating this successful integration of citizen involvement in the census exercise.
