Waymo Robotaxis Blind to Construction Zones
18 Jun
Summary
- Waymo AVs incorrectly entered 13 closed freeway construction zones.
- A software flaw prevents Waymo's system from recognizing construction areas.
- Freeway services are suspended until a software fix is deployed.

Waymo has initiated a software recall affecting 3,871 of its autonomous robotaxis after multiple incidents where vehicles entered closed freeway construction zones at speed. The company identified a flaw in its fifth-generation automated driving system that prevents it from properly recognizing these zones.
This oversight led to at least 13 reported incidents, six in Phoenix and seven in the San Francisco Bay Area during April and May. Waymo stated the AV may enter construction zones due to prioritizing other hazards or failing to recognize the zone itself. Consequently, Waymo's freeway services remain suspended until a software fix is deployed via an over-the-air update.
The company is actively developing a solution for this issue. While the vehicles can continue operating in non-freeway areas, the current disruption to freeway services has been noticeable, with significant wait times reported recently. This recall follows other recent software updates for Waymo vehicles, including issues with flooded roads, school buses, and roadway barriers.
