Waymo Robotaxi Crash: Redacted Responses Fuel NHTSA Probe

Waymo has submitted responses to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) concerning an investigation into a robotaxi crash that occurred in January. The crash involved a Waymo robotaxi and a 9-year-old girl near a school in Santa Monica, California. The vehicle was traveling at 17 mph but reduced speed to 6 mph before colliding with the child, who sustained minor injuries.

NHTSA requested extensive information from Waymo regarding speed limit determinations in school zones, any complaints received about robotaxi behavior near schools, and software documentation. Waymo's initial responses were heavily redacted, citing confidential business information. The company had sought and received an extension from the initial May 8 deadline.

Waymo's senior director of safety, Matthew Schwall, indicated a mutual goal to facilitate the investigation while avoiding undue burdens. The investigation is separate from the National Transportation Safety Board's (NTSB) inquiry, which typically releases a detailed report after 12 months. Waymo confirmed on Thursday that it has completed all submissions to NHTSA.
