Gig Workers Paid to Close Self-Driving Car Doors
13 Feb
Summary
- Waymo pays gig workers to close car doors that are left open.
- This program aims to enhance autonomous vehicle fleet efficiency.
- Future Waymo vehicles will feature automated door closures.

Waymo, an autonomous vehicle company, is currently running a pilot program in Atlanta where gig workers are paid to close doors left ajar on its self-driving cars. This initiative is designed to enhance the efficiency of their autonomous fleet, as an improperly closed door can render a vehicle inoperable and potentially obstruct traffic.
This program, which began earlier this year, has seen DoorDash drivers receive payment for closing Waymo vehicle doors. In Los Angeles, a similar service uses the Honk app, with users offered up to $24 for the task, a higher amount than in Atlanta.
Waymo has stated that future models of their vehicles will be equipped with automated door closure systems. This current reliance on human assistance underscores a unique challenge in the development of autonomous transportation technology.
