Texas has become a key battleground for autonomous vehicle technology, with Waymo registering 577 AVs, far ahead of competitors. This data emerges from a new Texas Department of Motor Vehicles website, launched May 28, 2026, under a law requiring AV companies to register their fleets. The tool offers the public an unprecedentedly clear view of AV operations within the state.
While Waymo leads in fleet size with 577 vehicles, Avride follows with 317, and Nuro with 47. Tesla, which offers robotaxi services in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, has registered 42 AVs. Other companies, such as Volkswagen's MOIA, have smaller fleets for services like autonomous microbuses. The registration numbers do not reflect commercial operation status or active usage.
The new tracking tool also covers self-driving trucks. Aurora, a commercial driverless trucking business launched in May 2025, has 91 trucks. Competitors Kodiak AI and Waabi have 33 and 13 trucks, respectively, while Gatik AI operates 64 mid-sized autonomous trucks. This data provides insight into the growing AV sector in Texas.
