Wartsila Eyes Double-Digit Hiring Growth on AI Power Demand
27 Feb
Summary
- US push for cleaner datacenter power will boost Wartsila's eco-friendly products.
- Company anticipates a double-digit percentage increase in servicing staff hiring.
- Wartsila's engines use 2,000 times less water than rival gas turbines.

The White House is engaging with major tech companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta regarding datacenters' power consumption and its impact on consumers. This focus on energy efficiency and environmental concerns, including water usage and pollution, is becoming a critical issue, particularly ahead of U.S. elections. Wartsila, a Finnish energy company, sees this as a significant opportunity for its more sustainable engine products.
The company expects an 80% growth in its datacenter engine delivery capacity by 2028. Wartsila's CEO highlighted that U.S. datacenters, which account for about half of the world's facilities, are increasingly looking for efficient backup power solutions. Wartsila's technology stands out by consuming up to 2,000 times less water than comparable gas turbines, while also reducing emissions and fuel costs by 20-35%.
This surge in demand is anticipated to drive a "double-digit" percentage increase in Wartsila's U.S.-based servicing staff over the next two years. Currently, around half of Wartsila's revenue comes from servicing its installed engines. To meet this growing need for skilled technicians, the CEO urged an expansion of vocational training opportunities within the U.S., noting a current tight supply of qualified talent.
