Summary
- E-bike integrates rear camera and radar for blind-spot detection.
- Smart glasses display speed, directions, and warnings on a HUD.
- Helmet features lights, crash detection, and connects to the e-bike.
Volkswagen has introduced a new e-bike, a collaboration with n+, designed with automotive safety technology to enhance rider security. This innovative bicycle system comprises three components: the bike itself, smart glasses, and a helmet. The e-bike features an integrated rear-view camera and radar sensors that detect vehicles in blind spots and alert the rider.
Information such as speed, navigation, and these safety warnings are displayed on a monocular heads-up display within the lightweight smart glasses. These glasses offer an impressive eight-hour battery life. The helmet, while bulky, provides head protection, integrated lights for visibility, and sophisticated electronics, including crash detection. It also boasts an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, though its three-hour battery life is less than that of the glasses.
During a test ride on a closed track, the e-bike demonstrated good handling and cornering capabilities. The heads-up display proved to be minimally distracting, remaining visible without diverting the rider's primary focus from the road ahead. The system simplifies to a VW logo when not in active use, reactivating upon renewed focus. While the helmet's design and battery life were points of concern, the overall impression of the e-bike's safety features is highly positive.
