Volkswagen subsidiary MOIA America, in partnership with Uber, has begun testing autonomous microbuses in Los Angeles, a crucial step toward launching a commercial robotaxi service by late 2026. The initial phase will involve around 10 electric ID. Buzz minivans, with plans to eventually expand the fleet to over 100 vehicles.
This pilot program, set to start in the coming weeks, reflects a strategy to integrate autonomous mobility into real-world operations. Los Angeles was chosen due to its history with car culture and embrace of new mobility solutions. The vehicles will initially operate with a human safety operator on board, with fully driverless operations anticipated in 2027.
MOIA America, formerly Volkswagen ADMT, faces a regulatory process including permits from the California Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Public Utilities Commission before commercial deployment. Uber's broader AV strategy includes partnerships with numerous companies, such as Waymo and a recent deal with Rivian for 10,000 autonomous R2 robotaxis planned for San Francisco and Miami in 2028.
