Viasat Eyes Space Data Centers, Focuses on Connectivity
7 Feb
Summary
- Viasat sees a role in providing communication links for space data centers.
- Orbital data center interest grows due to AI demand and terrestrial limits.
- ViaSat-3 satellite launches are proceeding, with two more entering service soon.

Satellite operator Viasat is positioning itself to support the emerging orbital data center market by providing essential communication links, rather than building the centers themselves. This strategic interest aligns with a broader surge in demand for space-based computing infrastructure, driven by AI processing needs and the constraints of terrestrial data centers, such as power and cooling limitations. Viasat CEO Mark Dankberg noted that efficient power generation and heat dissipation in orbit are critical challenges for space computing.
While Viasat focuses on its core business, including the advancement of its ViaSat-3 satellite program, it acknowledges the potential of orbital data centers. The second ViaSat-3 satellite is slated for service in May, with the Asia-focused third satellite expected by late summer. The company is also progressing with its direct-to-device (D2D) joint venture, Equatys. Viasat is concurrently evaluating strategic options, which may include separating its government and commercial operations, as it navigates competitive pressures and works to reduce its debt.
