Summary
- Vertu Alphafold offers AI agent, Hermes, for executive tasks.
- Device uses ZTE/Nubia hardware platform with luxury materials.
- AI agent shows promise but has accuracy and consistency issues.

The smartphone industry's AI race sees Vertu carving a niche with its luxury foldable, the Alphafold, targeting affluent executives. Priced from $6,880, the device emphasizes an AI agent named Hermes to automate daily tasks, rather than competing on standard specifications.
While the Alphafold boasts luxury materials like calfskin leather and titanium, its underlying hardware platform is developed through a partnership involving ZTE/Nubia. This mirrors past Vertu models, which have similarly adapted existing handsets with premium finishes and custom software.
Testing of the Hermes Agent revealed ambitious capabilities in analyzing local files and automating cross-app workflows. However, it also exhibited inconsistencies, occasional inaccuracies, and a less refined user experience compared to competitors like Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7.
Vertu positions the Alphafold as a business platform with specialist AI agents for legal and investment advice, alongside a human concierge service. Security is also a key selling point, with claims of encrypted conversations and a dedicated A5 security chip for hardware-level protection.
Despite its premium branding and AI services, the Alphafold's execution falls short of its substantial price tag. The core hardware offers little differentiation from less expensive foldables, making its value proposition difficult to justify against more mature offerings.
