A recent Pew Research Center survey reveals that AI chatbots have become a daily habit for nearly three in 10 US teenagers. The study found that 64% of adolescents have engaged with these conversational AI services, with usage rates increasing for those aged 15 and older. Daily use was also notably higher among Black and Hispanic teens compared to their White peers.
ChatGPT emerged as the leading AI chatbot among US teens, with 59% reporting its use. Google Gemini and Meta AI followed, with 23% and 20% usage, respectively. This widespread adoption occurs amidst ongoing discussions and lawsuits concerning the potential mental self-harm risks associated with AI chatbots for underage users, prompting some providers to implement parental controls.
Beyond chatbots, the survey also highlighted broader teen social media habits. YouTube remains the most popular platform, with TikTok and Instagram also seeing high daily engagement. Concurrently, 40% of teens reported being online "almost constantly," indicating a continued high level of digital immersion among this demographic.
