US Bans Chinese Robots Over Security Fears

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has enacted a ban on advanced robotic devices and connected power inverters originating from China. This decision, announced on Tuesday, is driven by concerns that such technology presents "unacceptable risks" to United States national security. The FCC views these advanced robots, including humanoids and quadrupeds, as potential tools for surveillance or remote commandeering by foreign entities.

This regulatory action by the FCC underscores the Trump administration's broader objective to bolster domestic technology production and encourage firms to shift manufacturing to the United States. An administration official emphasized the need for secure, independent supply chains for critical and emerging technologies, linking economic security directly to national security.

The newly implemented restrictions apply to robot and inverter models not yet released. However, the FCC retains the authority to revoke sales authorizations for models already cleared for the US market. China is a major global producer of inverters, with companies like Sungrow Power Supply and Huawei being prominent in the sector. Huawei, in particular, is already subject to significant US sanctions.

While humanoid robots with AI capabilities are anticipated for widespread adoption in various sectors, reliable inverter sources are crucial for the booming datacenter construction in the US. The Chinese embassy in Washington did not immediately provide a comment regarding the FCC's decision.
