EV Charging in Minutes: The Future Arrives!

Summary

  • Ultra-fast EV chargers can refill batteries in nearly the same time as gas cars.
  • China's BYD will launch a 1,500 kW charger capable of 70% charge in 5 minutes.
  • Recharging speed is limited by ion bottlenecks and damaging heat in batteries.
EV Charging in Minutes: The Future Arrives!

The wait for electric vehicle (EV) charging may soon be a thing of the past. Developers are creating ultra-fast charging systems that can replenish an EV battery in a fraction of the current time, potentially dispelling the last major barrier to widespread EV adoption.

China's BYD is scheduled to introduce a groundbreaking 1,500 kilowatt (kW) drive-through charger in Paris on April 8th. This system is designed to significantly reduce charging times. When used with BYD's Denza Z9GT, the vehicle's 122 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery can reach 70% capacity from 10% in just five minutes.

Fully charging the Denza Z9GT will take a mere nine minutes. This rapid recharging capability stems from specialized public fast-chargers that bypass the car's internal charger, allowing direct conversion of grid power into the direct current batteries require.

However, the speed of recharging lithium-ion batteries is constrained by physics. As charging rates increase, bottlenecks can form for lithium ions migrating to the anode, generating resistance and heat, which can damage the battery.
