UK SMEs Risk Closure Due to Cyberattacks
18 Mar
Summary
- One in five SMEs would close within three months of a data breach.
- Many businesses connect to public Wi-Fi, exposing sensitive data.
- Two-thirds of businesses have not updated cybersecurity measures recently.

Small UK businesses are sleepwalking into a cybersecurity crisis, with a concerning one in five stating they would need to close within three months of a data breach. These businesses collectively face an estimated annual loss of up to £100,000 due to unbudgeted security fixes and malware recovery.
Despite recognizing threats like phishing and malware, many SMEs exhibit risky digital habits. Over half connect to free public Wi-Fi, and 15% access sensitive work documents this way. Furthermore, a third work from coffee shops weekly, and nearly a quarter work on public transport. Worryingly, 67% have not implemented new cybersecurity measures in the past year, and 45% provide no employee training on recognizing threats.
Many business owners are aware of various cyber threats, including phishing, malware, and unauthorized apps. However, one in five admit they wouldn't know if their device was compromised, and a significant portion download apps without checking security permissions. A quarter have left devices unlocked in public, and nearly half do not prioritize cybersecurity when choosing work devices, despite most using their mobile phones for work.
