UK Grid Boss's Data Center Plan Sparks Debate
6 May
Summary
- Grid connection queue not a reliable demand indicator.
- Data centers require proximity to end users due to latency.
- Smart grid solutions and flexibility are key, not relocation.

Fintan Slye, chief executive of the UK's National Energy System Operator, has suggested relocating data centers to areas with abundant renewable energy like Scotland. However, TechUK, the trade association for the UK tech sector, offers a measured response.
TechUK cautions that the substantial near 100GW connection queue is not a reliable indicator of actual demand, as many applications are speculative. They stress that data centers are precision infrastructure with an operational requirement for proximity to end users, dictated by the physics of latency.
Instead of redirecting critical digital infrastructure away from population centers, TechUK proposes solutions such as harnessing smart data for efficient grid use and accelerating vital build-outs. They also advocate for scaling proven flexibility solutions, including battery storage and vehicle-to-grid charging. While acknowledging a role for regions like Scotland, TechUK believes this should complement, not replace, investment in capacity near major UK demand centers, emphasizing the critical importance of correct location policy for the UK's AI ambitions.
