UK banks are facing significant challenges in accessing Anthropic's advanced AI model, Mythos, an issue that underscores a critical need for Britain to develop its own artificial intelligence capabilities. Harriet Rees, a government-appointed "AI champion," emphasized the urgency for the UK to build AI infrastructure, models, and expertise to reduce dependence on U.S. tech providers.
Rees, alongside Rohit Dhawan, head of AI at Lloyds Banking Group, has proposed a package of recommendations aimed at enhancing the adoption of AI within the financial sector. These proposals also call for regulators to scrutinize the increasing use of AI chatbots for delivering financial advice to consumers.
Anthropic confirmed the ongoing rollout of Mythos 5 outside the United States, coordinating with the U.S. government to expand access. The UK government, under finance minister Rachel Reeves, has outlined a plan for "AI sovereignty," supporting domestic companies in the global AI competition. To enhance transparency and resilience, the UK is considering designating critical AI providers as regulated entities, similar to U.S. cloud providers.
