Summary
- AI Airlock receives a $4.8m funding increase over three years.
- Funding aims to strengthen regulatory pathways for AI healthcare technologies.
- Programme addresses regulatory challenges for AI diagnostic tools.

The UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has announced a substantial £3.6 million ($4.8 million) funding increase for its AI Airlock programme. This multi-year investment, spanning from 2026 to 2029, will significantly enhance the regulatory sandbox for AI as a medical device (AIaMD).
The additional funding, provided annually by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), enables broader, long-term evaluations and the development of sustainable regulatory pathways for innovative AI healthcare technologies. AI Airlock, a collaborative effort involving the MHRA, DHSC, NHS AI Team, and Team AB, is pivotal for AI regulatory reform.
Since its pilot phase in 2024, AI Airlock has identified critical regulatory challenges for AI medical devices. These include ensuring risk management, anchoring AI model responses in clinical data, and implementing continuous post-market monitoring. Findings from the current phase, exploring technologies like voice tools and diagnostics for cancer, are anticipated in mid-2026.
James Pound, MHRA executive director, highlighted that this funding boost is crucial for scaling up the programme and reinforcing its ability to ensure AI-powered medical devices reach patients safely and efficiently, backed by robust regulatory oversight.
