The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has successfully deactivated more than two crore Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals. This significant data hygiene initiative aims to ensure the accuracy of the national identity database and proactively prevent potential misuse of Aadhaar credentials.
To streamline the process, UIDAI has introduced a user-friendly online service on its myAadhaar portal. Family members can now easily report the death of a relative by providing the deceased's Aadhaar number and the official death registration details. This measure is crucial for deterring fraudulent activities and safeguarding government subsidies.
The authority is actively collaborating with various entities, including banks, to integrate verified death data. By deactivating Aadhaar numbers post-mortem, UIDAI ensures that these unique identifiers are not reused, thereby preventing any wrongful access to welfare programs and maintaining the integrity of the system.
