Uber's New AV Data Fleet Hits the Road

Uber has unveiled a prototype vehicle designed to gather extensive real-world driving data for its autonomous vehicle (AV) partners. This initiative is spearheaded by Uber's AV Labs division, established earlier this year.
The company plans to deploy 500 modified Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric vehicles globally throughout 2026. These vehicles are equipped with an array of sensors, including 14 cameras, eight lidar sensors, and nine radars, in partnership with Roush Performance.
This fleet is projected to collect two million miles of driving data per month, supporting the development of advanced self-driving software. Uber aims to create the world's most geographically diverse training dataset for AV technology.
Uber has a substantial data collection history, having previously gathered data from thousands of specially equipped vehicles across numerous cities and hundreds of Lucid Air vehicles in the US and Europe over the past two years.
