The San Francisco Bay Area is on the cusp of a significant advancement in autonomous mobility with the impending public launch of the Lucid Gravity robotaxi. This innovative vehicle is the result of a strategic collaboration between ride-hailing giant Uber, electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid Motors, and autonomous technology firm Nuro.
An early look at an engineering prototype in Mountain View, California, revealed a vehicle designed for luxury and capacity. Unlike competitors, the Lucid Gravity robotaxi can accommodate up to six passengers, offering ample legroom and a panoramic roof for an enhanced rider experience. Its sensor suite, comprising cameras, lidar, and radar, is integrated subtly onto the vehicle's exterior.
Nuro is currently conducting real-world tests on public roads in the San Francisco Bay Area and Houston, supported by closed-course testing and simulations. Lucid is responsible for the manufacturing of these vehicles at its Arizona facility. Riders will eventually be able to summon these autonomous rides through the Uber app.
The Lucid Gravity robotaxi is slated to begin service in the San Francisco Bay Area later this year. Following this initial rollout, the service is expected to expand to Houston by mid-2027, marking a new phase in the adoption of self-driving technology for public transportation.
