Uber Shifts to AWS, Challenges Cloud Rivals
7 Apr
Summary
- Uber expands AWS cloud services contract for ride-sharing features.
- Company trials AWS's Trainium3 AI chip, Nvidia's competitor.
- This deal impacts cloud rivals Google and Oracle significantly.

Uber has substantially expanded its contract for AWS cloud services, intending to run more of its ride-sharing operations on Amazon's custom chips. The company is increasing its use of AWS's Graviton processors and initiating a trial for Trainium3, an artificial intelligence chip developed by AWS as a competitor to Nvidia's offerings.
This development marks a significant shift from Uber's recent strategy. In February 2025, Uber had entered into major, multi-year agreements with Oracle and Google Cloud Platform to migrate its IT infrastructure away from its own data centers. At that time, Uber highlighted its use of ARM-powered instances, including those from Ampere on Oracle's cloud.
However, the landscape has evolved. Oracle sold its stake in Ampere, and reports indicate a shift in Oracle's strategy towards in-house chip design, while also signing deals with Nvidia. Now, AWS is announcing a larger contract with Uber, a key customer for Oracle, underscoring the competitive dynamics in the cloud sector and the growing importance of specialized AI hardware.
