Tu-214 Cockpit Crew Cut: Efficiency Takes Flight
13 Oct
Summary
- Tu-214 aircraft flight controls are being modified.
- The goal is to reduce the cockpit crew from three to two.
- MAI and Tupolev JSC are collaborating on the project.
Design engineers from the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) and Tupolev JSC are undertaking modifications to the Tu-214 medium-range passenger aircraft's flight controls. The critical goal is to reduce the cockpit crew from three to two by eliminating the flight engineer position, thereby increasing commercial viability.
This endeavor includes a thorough analysis of the aircraft's onboard equipment systems to identify components needing optimization or replacement. Simultaneously, efforts are focused on minimizing project costs and ensuring subsequent certification procedures align with strict deadlines. Participants in the MAI continuing education program are developing preliminary cost estimates, work schedules, and a roadmap for industry collaboration.
The S.P. Gorbunov Kazan Aviation Plant, a subsidiary of Tupolev JSC, will serve as the production base for this modernization program. The project's scope also encompasses the design of an integration test bench for the avionics suite, essential for preparing the upgraded system for ground and flight testing. The program is slated for completion by the end of October, with leadership from MAI and Tupolev JSC set to review the outcomes.
