TRAI Rules: Block 1600/140 Calls Only via DND
10 Jul
Summary
- Apps cannot block calls from 1600 number series.
- Promotional calls from 140 number series are also restricted.
- Blocking these specific calls is only permitted via DND registry.

As of July 10, 2026, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a directive stating that no mobile application can block calls from the 1600 number series. This series is reserved for official communications from regulated entities, including financial institutions and government bodies, to their existing customers and for government-to-citizen interactions. The aim is to enhance the trustworthiness of these calls.
Furthermore, TRAI has clarified that promotional calls originating from the 140 number series, used by registered telemarketers, cannot be tagged or filtered by any app. Customers can only block these calls by registering their preferences on the Do Not Disturb (DND) registry, managed by the regulator. Any attempt to tag or filter calls from these series by apps is prohibited, as it could mislead customers who have opted to receive such calls through the DND registry.
