Toyota's Ethanol-Powered Hycross Arrives

The Toyota Innova Hycross is scheduled for a facelifted launch in India on November 26, 2026. This update is poised to introduce revised exterior styling and the significant possibility of a flex-fuel strong-hybrid powertrain. This innovative powertrain option could allow the MPV to operate on petrol-ethanol blends up to E85, expanding its fuel flexibility.

The flex-fuel capability follows Toyota's earlier demonstration of a strong-hybrid prototype using a modified 2.0-litre engine. Adapting to higher ethanol concentrations necessitates modifications to engine and fuel system components, including spark plugs, piston rings, and fuel lines. If implemented, this would make the Innova Hycross Toyota's first flex-fuel passenger vehicle in India.

Visually, the facelift is anticipated to feature a redesigned front fascia with updated lighting and grille elements. While the side profile and overall proportions are expected to remain consistent, minor revisions to alloy wheels and the rear end may offer differentiation. Spy shots suggest the cabin architecture will largely mirror the current model, though infotainment system updates or new upholstery options are possible.

The current Innova Hycross offers two 2.0-litre petrol powertrains: a naturally aspirated engine with a CVT and a strong-hybrid with an e-CVT, delivering fuel efficiency of 16.13 kmpl and 23.24 kmpl, respectively. Both are E20 compatible, and the potential shift to higher ethanol blends represents a considerable advancement in its fuel capabilities.
