22 Apr
Summary
- Threads now offers live chats for real-time event discussions.
- Select creators and Community Champions can host these chats.
- The feature debuts in the NBAThreads Community during Playoffs.

Threads has introduced "live chats," a new feature enabling real-time conversations centered around live events. This functionality is integrated within Threads communities, offering a dynamic way for users to connect during topical happenings. Selected creators, including Community Champions and media personalities, are empowered to host these live discussions. Participants can share various media types, including photos, videos, links, and emoji reactions, alongside text-based messages. Even if a chat is full, viewers can still observe, react, and participate in polls.
Meta is piloting this feature within the NBAThreads Community during the current Playoffs. Prominent hosts such as Malika Andrews and Rachel Nichols are leading these discussions. Live chats will be prominently displayed in the NBAThreads Community feed and may also appear in users' main Threads feeds. A visual indicator, a red ring around a host's profile picture, signifies an active live chat.
This expansion of Threads' capabilities follows its 2023 launch. Meta has consistently enhanced the platform with features like communities and long-form text posts. Recently, Threads received a web interface update and reported reaching 150 million daily users as of October. Future enhancements for live chats are planned, including co-hosting options and lock screen widgets.
