Tesla Recalls Thousands Over Blinding Headlights

Tesla has initiated a recall affecting 20,349 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. The recall centers on headlights whose low beams are excessively bright, potentially exceeding permissible light output.
The issue came to light after Transport Canada tested a Model 3 in 2023. Tesla was officially notified in 2024 that the vehicle's headlamp did not comply with low beam requirements. The company petitioned the NHTSA for an exemption in spring 2024, citing the issue as inconsequential to safety.
However, the NHTSA denied this petition in July 2026. The affected vehicles include 18,735 Model Y units from 2023 and 1,614 Model 3 units from 2017-2023. Tesla estimates 100% of these vehicles are impacted.
