Tesla Outperforms Chinese Rivals in Assisted Driving Highway Test
25 Jul
Summary
- Tesla scored best in a Chinese highway test of assisted driving technologies
- Chinese rivals Xiaomi, Huawei, and BYD lagged behind Tesla in the test
- Elon Musk reposted "the top results" of the test
A recent test of advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) on China's highways has revealed that Tesla, the electric vehicle company led by Elon Musk, outperformed its Chinese rivals. The test, conducted jointly by state television CCTV and Dcar, a unit of TikTok owner Bytedance, evaluated the performance of over 20 electric vehicle brands in a series of high-risk scenarios on highways and urban traffic.
Tesla's Model 3 and Model X scored the best among the 36 models tested, passing five out of six scenarios, while Chinese brands like BYD's Denza Z9GT and Huawei-backed Aito M9 failed in three scenarios. Xiaomi's SU7 only passed one out of six scenarios.
Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, reposted the "top results" of the test, highlighting the company's lead in autonomous driving technology. However, Tesla has faced challenges in China, as the U.S. does not allow its AI software to be trained locally, while the automaker has been seeking approval from Chinese regulators to transfer data saved in Shanghai back to the United States for algorithm training.
The test results have prompted calls for Chinese brands to address the gap with Tesla in autonomous driving capabilities. Wang Yao, the deputy chief engineer of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, urged domestic brands to face up to the challenge.
