Musk Admits Tesla FSD Needs More Than Software
23 Apr
Summary
- Millions of Tesla owners will need hardware upgrades for future FSD.
- Current Hardware 3 is insufficient for unsupervised Full Self-Driving.
- Tesla plans micro-factories to handle hardware replacement burden.

Elon Musk disclosed on Wednesday that a future, unsupervised version of Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) software will necessitate hardware upgrades for millions of owners. This admission marks a shift from previous assurances that only software updates would be required.
Cars equipped with Hardware 3, sold between 2019 and 2023, will need new computers and cameras. Musk acknowledged this replacement process will be "painful and difficult." To manage the anticipated service demand, Tesla is exploring the creation of "micro-factories" in major metropolitan areas.
This contrasts with a statement made by CFO Vaibhav Taneja in October 2025, who suggested that Hardware 3 might still be adaptable for FSD. However, Musk was clear that Hardware 3 lacks the inherent capability for truly unsupervised FSD, and upgrades will be mandatory for such advancements.
