Tesla Cybertruck FSD Switcheroo Costs Buyers
12 Jun
Summary
- Cybertruck buyers cannot transfer FSD software to new vehicles.
- Tesla changed FSD transfer terms from 'order' to 'delivery' date.
- Affected buyers face high upgrade costs or monthly fees.

Some Tesla Cybertruck buyers are expressing frustration following a quiet alteration to the company's support page regarding Full Self-Driving (FSD) software transfers. Customers who purchased the base Cybertruck AWD model, briefly available for $59,990 in February 2026, discovered they could not transfer their existing FSD licenses to their new vehicles, which began deliveries in June 2026.
This issue arose because Tesla updated its FSD transfer eligibility criteria from requiring a new vehicle 'order' by a certain deadline to requiring vehicle 'delivery.' Since Cybertruck deliveries commenced months after the March 2026 deadline, February order holders were effectively excluded. Buyers have reported being offered two unsatisfactory options: upgrading to a higher Cybertruck trim for at least an additional $20,000 or paying a $99 monthly subscription for FSD.
This situation has led to some buyers canceling their orders and has fueled broader criticism of Tesla's business practices, with some calling it a 'bait and switch.' The change aligns with Tesla's broader pivot to a subscription-only model for FSD, potentially incentivized by Elon Musk's compensation targets for FSD subscribers. Affected customers, particularly those who chose the base trim for its cost-effectiveness, find neither the upgrade nor the monthly fee palatable.
